We found a new hike that goes over the mountain and overlooks the whole town. It almost looks like a desert because of how dry it is! I am thinking Spring will come very early this year, especially since California hasn't even seen any snow this winter. I admit that I am a rain person, but I guess if you can't fight it, might as well embrace it. California is funny that way.

As I was finishing up this collage on my Iphone, I realized something a little funny. All of these photos unintentionally involve coffee. I also find it ironic that my boyfriend hated even the smell of coffee a year ago, and now he orders an Americano. I guess being a barista does that to you!

I love how every culture has a different ritual with coffee and a different way to socialize around it. I think that we, as Americans, rush the process too much in our fast pace life (something this country is often guilty of). Andrew recently filmed a video for Kinfolk about the syphon process and I thought it was pretty spectacular. I mean, look how much effort goes into one cup of coffee!

Hello Hello, I'm Isla and I write the blog A fine day for sailing. I'll be filling in today while the lovely Taylor is away for a little while.

The little deer has such a lovely natural quality too it. Taylor's photographs always make me want to get outside and go on a hike. This past year I seem to have got my self caught up in San Francisco city life and i've neglected my outdoor spirit. Being home in Namibia for Christmas, and spending every walking hour exploring my old turf is making me even more determined to change things when I get back to SF.

It's the perfect time of year to make promises to ones self. I guess my resolution is to spend more time out of the city. To make a point to go on all the camping trips and hikes I talk about.

There's not really much to this one. All you need is a paint brush, liquid gold leaf (costs 10 dollars or so), and some tape. I got all of these bowls and cups for under a dollar at some local thrift stores.

Beware, this is highly addicting and you'll probably wanna gold leaf just about anything, if you're like me. I'm even finding ways to incorporate it into some jewelry!

Life has gotten a bit busier, so the blog has been a little slow. Thank you to everyone who comments, it keeps me encouraged and helps me to blog more often! Fall is my absolute, hands down, favorite time of the year. Living in California during this time is a real drag sometimes because one morning you'll wake up and it'll be rainy and by twelve a'clock the sun will be a'shining. However, Philip and I make the most out of the foggy days we get by picnics with apple cider, watching our favorite classic fall movies (yes, we have those, haha), bike rides, thrifting, and being cozy. I've had a nasty cold/virus/flu thing since Monday so I haven't been doing too much. I am finally getting over it, though, yay! Today I woke up to the rain (FAVORITE), went on a bike ride, had good food, went on a hike, walked on the pier, thrifted, and lots of other things I like to do. When I'm sick I feel like I miss out on all good things so I kinda squeezed them into one day, haha. And can I just say that I've been the thrifting queen lately? Gettin' so lucky!!

1. Favorite camera to shoot on? This is an eternally difficult question, and I think it's not too much of an exaggeration to say that it's like asking a parent which one of their children is their favorite.

So I'll answer it like this:
My most trusty camera is my Polaroid 195. My most impressive camera is probably my Mamiya Universal Press. My most used camera is probably my Voigtlander Bessa R2. My most beautiful and fun-to-use camera is my Zeiss Ikon ZM. Haha. Those four are what I do 97.4% of my work with. I also have a Canon 5d Mk II for them times when I'm forced at gunpoint to use digital (but the camera still owns a very soft spot in my heart).

2. Favorite place to travel? So far, I've loved Japan and Ireland the most. Turkey was pretty sweet as well. I am obsessed with medieval western history, so anywhere in Europe is a good bet - the snowier, the better. North is my favorite direction.

3. Favorite decade? I've never given it much thought, but off the top of my head, I'd have to say the 40s for style, the 60s for music, and the 70s for cameras (the Polaroid SX-70 and the Polaroid 195 both were manufactured in the first half of the 70s).

4. Favorite music? A couple of mainstays for me would be Fleet Foxes and Radiohead. A couple of bands I'm really into right now are Other Lives and The National. Some local Portland bands I love are Greylag, Harlowe and the Great North Woods, and Great Wilderness.

5. Can't live without. . . Chuck Norris, of course.

6. Favorite photographers? I don't honestly follow that many big photographers. I have some favorites that I've met over Flickr, though. One is Aëla Labbé. She's so awesome. I do love myself some Japanese artists, though. Akihiko Yoshida, Ayami Kojima, Hiroaki Samura, and Yoji Shinkawa are just a few of my faves.

7. Coveting. . .. There are always a whole bunch of lenses and cameras that I wouldn't mind having. I have a pretty tightly-formed set of equipment, but I would love a black Zeiss Ikon, a 50mm f/2 Planar in Leica M mount, a good solid Zeiss or Voigtlander wide-angle lens, or something like that. I'm actually pretty lucky and have most of the gear now that I think I'd ever want. That might not be the case in a month, though. I tend to get bored easily ^_^

8. Favorite thing I own is . . Another tough question. I suppose my most USEFUL thing is either my Voigtlander Bessa R2 or my Polaroid 195. The most fun thing is my Ikon. Maybe my computer, too?

I do, however, have a room full of cacti. I love them all. If I could carry them around in my pockets, I would. I have too low a pain tolerance for that, though.

No, I haven't forgotten about the vintage shop, I am trying to make it snazzy and new. I have TONS of new clothes and am working on a Fall lookbook. A Fine Day for Sailing is a blog that I have recently fallen in love with and keep coming back to. She mixes modern, vintage, tomboy, and girly just perfectly to create a perfect style.

1. Favorite shops? I'm addicted to thrifting so second handstores are my jam. Salvation army, goodwill, savers, the weird little church ones... you name it. I don't shop online very often, I like to be able to hold things and really see them. Home in San Francisco my favorite stores to pop into and browse are the general store, painted bird, and paxton gate.

2. Current blog crushes? ohhhh so many! ...but lately i've been getting excited when I see new posts at the hummingbird girls, lady moriarty , kennedy holmes, and Lost in the Haze

3. Favorite musicians? Take a deep breath....Talking Heads, The weeknd, The Radio Department, Mirah, Kate Bush, The Velvet Underground, Neutral Milk Hotel, Summer Camp, Bon Iver, Band of horses, Painted Palms, Washed out, Fever Ray, Blackbird Blackbird.... and many more.

4. Favorite decade? the 70's!

1. Favorite shops? My favorite places to shop are flea markets, but I also love a trip to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Thrift Town. My favorite San Francisco vintage shops are Ver Unica, Held Over, and Painted Bird. I also love visiting my hometown up north, Santa Rosa, and ogling all the pretty treasures at Hot Couture and Skirt Chaser Vintage.

2. Current blog crushes? My crush list is looong! I recently discovered Dakota's blog Sweetheart of the Rodeo and I'm completely smitten with her vintage style. Other crushes are Anabela, Hannah, Emily, Crystal, Doris Anne, and you!

3. Favorite musicians? As I write this I'm listening to the Crystal Stilts, a newer band that I like very much. But I usually don't keep up with what's new musically, instead I listen to the same old favorites I have loved forever: Patsy Cline, Nina Simone, The Beach Boys, Neil Young, The Kinks, Nick Drake, Yo La Tengo, Syd Barrett, Josephine Baker...

4. Favorite decade? Lately I've been the most fascinated by the 1920's, probably a result of reading a biography about Clara Bow and watching a lot of silent films. But I suppose my favorite decade would be the present one because I get to enjoy all the lovely bits from every decade that came before!

5. I can't live without my. . . 1950's foldable comb that I always keep in my purse. It's windy here in San Francisco so I'm constantly combing my bangs back into place. Also my navy blue Ferragamos that I wear constantly, my laptop, and my chubby cat Donut. Oh wait, should I have said friends and family instead? Them too! ;)

6. Favorite place to travel? My new favorite place is Reno, believe it or not. I'm almost hesitant to reveal just how magical it can be because it still feels like a secret, but when I went there a few months ago I had one of the best weekends ever. I'm a sucker for kitsch and Reno IS kitsch. Also, the thrift and antique stores there are crazy amazing and I found the perfect karaoke bar where I could definitely see myself becoming a regular. New York is high on my list too!

7. My dream job is. . . Pretty much what I'm doing right now, buying and selling vintage. Currently it's not my full time job but I'm hoping to make that transition sometime in the near future. I love nothing more than searching high and low for beautiful vintage pieces and then finding them a new home. I also wouldn't mind being the singer for a jazz band, I just have to find the perfect group of talented old men to be my musicians! They have to be old men, obviously... preferably wearing suits and bow ties.

8. Current obsessions? I'm pretty obsessed with the burgers at Super Duper Burger, which just opened a short walk from my apartment. I'm also obsessed with my upcoming trip to New York, making plans for my blog and shop, and watching American Pickers (which I only just recently discovered, the downside of not owning a TV).

9. Guilty pleasure? Karaoke, always and forever! Although at this point I'm past the guilty part... it's just unabashed, geeky love

We spent most of the day in the car, which I didn't mind because the coast is so pretty! Poor Philip found out he had pneumonia the day before, but he still wanted to go and he drove the whole way (whadda guy!) We went to Kevah for brunch, explored some beaches (what happened to the day of FREE beaches and parks, California?), and took lotso pictures. It was a good birthday!

A LUCKY DAY

I absolutely love my new 20s turban I got for a buck today. People on the street think I'm silly for wearing it, but who cares! Old ladies love it, and they are the only ones that count.
Ah, it feels good to be back in the normal routine of junk hunting. We found this great sale in a Benny and Joon type house filled with vintage dresses, guitars, and art supplies. I bought a Petit Prince box filled with vintage beads and chain, a wonderful gunny sax dress, and other little nick nacks (such as a r2-d2 hat and a draw your own communist etch-a-sketch, haha). We then stopped by Ruby Rose, where I was gifted a sweet deer lamp. Cuuute! And thennn on our way home we found another yard sale (bless his soul) with only antiques. I spotted a gorgeous 1900s-20s, wedding dress with a matching victorian veil. Note to self, when you go yard saling stop by an ATM, ya dummy! I think the sweet old couple running it must've liked me because they gave me the dress for 10 bucks (that I magically found in my purse), what a deal! I have no idea when it's from (20s?), but they told me his great grandmother wore it and that it would probably fit me, which was flattering yet sadly false.

Denmark & Estonia // No. 2

These are a few shots from Copenhagen, Denmark. They have equally cool style as the Swedes, so I'm thinkin' it's something all Scandinavians are blessed with, haha. The city reminds me an awful lot of Amsterdam, with the canals and bikes, but a whole lot cleaner.

P.S. there have been some questions as to when I will re-open my shop, so to all of you who were wondering, I givin' it a bit of a revamp it and I should be open sometime in September! I haven't been too pleased of the quality of the pictures, shoots, ect. so hopefully this will give me some time to work up inspiration for it. But now coming to think of it, I should have a end of summer sale to get ready for fall! Too soon? Eh, maybe, but I sure do love fall.

P.S.P.S I finally decided to buy a layout from Liven Design. How do you all like it!? Dang I just like writing now because it's finally aligned with the pictures! hallelujahhh.

SWEDEN // No. 1

Phew, it feels good to be home after a 16 hour plane ride! It is 7 in the morning (my brain thinks it's 4 pm) and I am feeling a bit jet lagged, so I thought I'd put it to good use and get going on the daunting task of making a post! First up, Sweden. It is such a peaceful place filled with well-dressed people and adorable babies. My favorite thing was the street style. I've been to many cities in the world, and I gotta say that this one is my favorite for style. If I had to describe it I would say it's effortlessly chic. This is the first post of many, so beware ;)

GUEST POST / APPLE BUTTER

Hi Friends, my name is Hannah and I'm filling in for the day while Taylor is off romping around Scandinavia! I usually post over at Whiskey Shores, where I share my work in textiles and some film photos. Today I thought I'd share one of my favorite things to make - Apple Butter! I know summer is in full swing, and apples won't be plentiful until the fall, but I just cracked open my last jar of apple butter, so making more has been on my mind.

Last fall I was gifted a whole bag of apples a family friend picked off her trees, there were so many I knew I couldn't eat them all before they went bad so I got started making butter.

First step is to peel, core and chop the apples into smaller pieces and throw them in a pot with enough water so they're just covered. Cook them until the apples are soft enough to mash, and at this point I put them in batches into my blender - you've got yourself some applesauce!

Once pureed I put everything back into the pots, added cinnamon and a little sugar. With the stove on a low heat I let the apples cook down, fair warning: once the butter gets going it really bubbles and pops, and makes a total mess.

Apple butter was literally flying across the kitchen, all over the floor, most of the way up the wall and beyond. Near the end I was dodging splatters and getting little burns all over, including in my hair.

I cooked it for somewhere near 12 hours? Something close to that, and when I was satisfied with the thickness of it I readied some jars and preserved the apple butter in a hot water bath.

This year I'm going to exclude the sugar all together, as mine was really sweet (but delicious, it's like apple pie in a jar) and maybe I'll try to vary the spice selection, throw in some cloves? And I'll definitely be using my crock-pot to minimize the mess.

Approximate recipe:

26 apples - peeled, cored, chopped

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cinnamon

yields about 6 pints

just popping in once more before I head off. on saturday, we are heading to my cousin's wedding in Grass Valley and then that night flying to Denmark! I am so excited to see Norway and Sweden because I've always wanted to go there. I also love Stockholm style, so maybe I'll get a few street style shots! Russia will be pretty interesting. since I've never been, I really don't know what to expect, but I'm sure it'll be good. anyone know of any cute shops and vintage stores in Stockholm? I'd love to hear! gees I use lots of exclamation points!

summer days

today really felt like summer. we went bike riding through the village, ate (veggie) hot dogs and watermelon, and sat on benches. we live the life of 80+ year olds and we love it.
